STORM Montana CuP Tournament
Back by popular demand!. The Storm Montana Cup Tournament is a tournament within the tournaments, with a separate entry fee and a separate payout (goal 1 in 4 entries) at the end of the last scratch bowling tournament of the season - the Ringin' 10 at Star Lanes in Butte. This tournament is only open to Montana Bowlers only, and is sponsored by Storm, the bowler's company..
The format is a point system, based on how each bowler performs at each of any 8 scratch tournaments in the Storm Montana Cup circuit. Those tournaments are the John Willey Memorial in Great Falls, the Treasure State Open in Billings, the Dick Wolff Memorial in Calgary, the Miller Masters in Helena (if held), the Ronan Scratch (limited entries) in Ronan, the US Open Qualifier in Montana, the Gary Gerhardt Memorial in Bozeman, and the Ringin' 10 in Butte. Knowing that not everyone can attend all 8 tournaments, qualifying points will only be taken from 4 of the 8 tournaments (highest point totals from up to 4 tournaments).
Since no points can be accumulated for not bowling a tournament, those points would qualify as one of the four lowest and not be considered if a bowler were to bowl 4 others.. The goal for participants is to bowl as many tournaments as possible, and to make the cut to increase your chance at getting max points. The overall goal is to increase entries into the individual tournaments be adding an incentive of a season long point system. That would mean re-entries as well, as more points are gained by making the cut (double points for those that make the cut!)
Points are accumulated based on the position each bowler ends in during qualifying, based on the number of bowlers that attempted to qualify. For those that qualify for match play on day 2 (or later the same day, depending on the tournament) the same concept for the point system is used, but points are doubled - giving more importance to qualifying so higher points can be accumulated. Bonus points are given for honor scores bowled at any point during the tournament, as well as high qualifiers, winners, and step ladder finalists (spots 2-5).
Due to the limited entries available at the Ronan scratch tournament, points will be doubled so as to be more consistent with other tournaments that average entries in the 80 entry range (like the Gerhardt, which is also a limited entry tournament).
I've also heard there is a chance the Miller Masters may not be held in Helena this year, so the Treasure State Open in Billings was added to potentially take its place. Even if the Miller Masters is held, the Treasure State Open will still be a candidate for garnering points. This decision was made just prior to the last shift of the John Willey qualifying on Saturday the 3rd of October.
Payout would be based on the number of entries, with the goal to pay 1 in 4. Payoffs for the top spot will be evenly distributed for those that earn a payoff spot, and will not be overly top-heavy. The winner will also receive a certificate for the Storm ball of their choice, compliments of Dave Dietz (scratchbowlers.com) and Storm (stormbowling.com).
Point Formula
Qualifying Place - Highest qualifying place subtracted by total number of total entries in the tournament (that number then gets turned into a positive number) plus one point (everyone who enters will get points based on where they qualify).
Example #1. Tournament has 97 entries. Bowler’s highest qualifying place (even if he or she re-entered) is 10th. Bowler gets 88 points (10-97=negative 87, flipped to a positive (87) + 1 = 88.
Example #2: Tournament has 108 entries. Bowler’s highest qualifying place (even if he or she re-entered) is 73rd. Bowler gets 36 points (73-108=negative 35, flipped to a positive (35) + 1 = 36.
Another way to look at this would be to use this simple approach. Let’s say there are 100 bowlers. Points would be given out this way:
1st: 100
2nd: 99
50th: 51
100th: 1
Cash Place - Cash place subtracted by total number of entries in the tournament, plus one point, then multiplied by two (double points for cashing)
Example #1. Tournament has 97 entries. Bowler’s highest cashing place is 10th. Bowler gets 176 points (10-97=negative 87, flipped to a positive (87) + 1 = 88 X 2 (for qualifying), which is 176.
Example #2: Tournament has 196 entries. Bowler’s highest cashing place is 9th. Bowler gets 376 points (9-196=negative 187, flipped to a positive (187) + 1 = 188 X2 (for qualifying), which is 376.
Another way to look at this would be to use this simple approach. Let’s say there are 150 bowlers. Points would be given out this way:
1st: 150 X 2 = 300
2nd: 149 X 2 = 298
18th: 133 X 2 = 264
32nd – 119 X 2 = 238
o These points would be in addition to the qualifying points
o A bowler that does not make it to the match play round (qualifies) would get zero points for this portion of the point system
Note: For double elimination match play tournaments, cashers will get the same placing as the highest casher in their cashing/position/exit from the tournament (example: if a group goes out 25th-32nd, anyone in that group will get credit for 25th)
Bonus Points are given for:
o 25 points for high qualifier
o 50 points for a tournament win
o 25 points for 2nd-5th (stepladder)
o 25 points for each honor score in the tournament (300, 299, 298, 800)

Additional Rules/Info:
Bowlers need to pay the $100 entry fee prior to throwing their first ball for score for any tournament to allow those points to count for that tournament, or to notify the organizer (Mike Reed) prior to bowling that you are "in". I can collect from you later.
For the ladies bowlers wanting/needing the US Open/MT All Star tournament points to count towards their score, a formula will be created to score points based on the number of men entries, since lady entries are typically smaller (which would not allow the ladies to achieve as many points as the men). Contact me for more information.
Only the highest qualifying scoring position counts for points. If a bowler enters the same tournament more than once (re-enters), only the highest qualifying position counts for points. Points won't be accumulated for each squad the bowler attempts to enter to qualify.
Once a bowler enters, there are no refunds for any reason (including injuries).
100% of the $100 entry fee goes to the payout fund. No fees for lineage, expenses, etc.. If any sponsor money is obtained, additional funds will be placed in the payout fund from the sponsorship money. The sponsorship money may be used for the purchase and engraving of a traveling "cup" trophy, however.
With Storm sponsoring the tournament, a certificate will be awarded by Storm at the end of the Storm Montana Cup tournament to the winner of the Storm Montana Cup. This certificate would be for a Storm ball of the winner's choice. This would be in addition to any prize winnings paid out from the entry fees.
Payout is 1 in 4. If 24 bowlers enter, we'll pay 6 places. If we can get 28, we'll pay 7. 32 will pay 8, and so on.
First place payout will be $900 if we can get 24 bowlers or more to enter.
New for the 2015-2016 Season
If I can get at least 8 bowlers interested, I'm also going to include a $25 "winner take all" side entry which will use total number of points for the entire season (not best 4 like the actual Montana Cup). The person with the most overall points after the Ringin' 10 would take the pot. Again, no fees or anything like that so the entire entry fee pot would be paid out to the person with the most points.
